How to Make Glycerin at Home?

Glycerin like you already know is used in drugs, food sweetening and even the printing industry. You can however make glycerin at home. You will need to use protective gloves since you will be dealing with high temperatures.

So, what do you need? You will need 4 teaspoons of lye and 2 cups of vegetable oil with a cup of water. You may buy lye from companies that sell soap ingredients or simply make it yourself from water and wood ash.

Heat the ingredients up in a pot and place a thermometer in it. You will have to stir the mixture constantly for at least 20 minutes or until the thermometer reads 125 deg F. Now, reduce the heat till the temperature drops to about 100 deg F.

Now, take the pot off the flame and allow it to thicken. Next, add in 4 teaspoons of salt while it is still hot.

Let the mixture cool down and observe soap forming at the top and glycerin at the bottom of the pot. You can separate the mixture by straining the soap out. Mold the glycerin in shapes you like.

Can I use it as normal body cream without mixing it with anything

    1. debshikha banerjee Reply

      Hello Amaka,

      Welcome to HNBT. 🙂
Coming to your query, the raw glycerin is a really thick liquid. So if you want to want to use it as a cream , you might not be able to massage it off well. Moreover, its sweet to taste. So watch out for ants. (*wink*)
I have never heard or seen anyone using raw glycerin as body cream apart from cracked heels or chapped lips. The diluted version is enough for body cream. Plus when yo apply something on your body, make sure it goes with your skin type. Consult a physician before doing so. If it’s compatible and give it a try, do let us your experience in the comments below.

      Have a good day! 🙂

your post was really helpful… I’m an African and dark skinned I hav dark sunburns beside my eyes. I wuld like to know if glycerine and rosewater can get rid of them, I purchased Eden glycerin and rose water. Thanks.

    1. debshikha banerjee Reply

      Hello Amen

      Welcome to HNBT 🙂

Glycerin gives immediate relief to sunburn because it hydrates the skin and gives immediate relief to the burn. So you can use it on your body. I’m sure you know that our face is much more sensitive that the rest of the body. So applying anything without consulting a physician would be really not advised. Plus glycerin will not help you get rid of the tan.

One homemade recipe I use to get rid of tan is applying curd. You can give it a try and let me know how it works out for you. 🙂
      Thank You 🙂
      Have a good day!

      Hello Asma
      Welcome to HNBT!
I have always used glycerin diluted with water to moisturize my hands and feet during the winter months. It is a wonderful moisturizer.
If vaseline does wonders to you, stick to it. You need not change to glycerin. But if it isn’t working, you may go for glycerin. But remember, DO NOT use two products at a time.

You told her not to mix the two, yet in the article it is listed together specifically for dry skin. Did you not write the article? Glycerin and petroleum jelly are fine together mixing them should cause absolute zero negative effects.

        1. debshikha banerjee Reply

          Hello Eva

I have heard from experts not to use two products at a time(but using a combination in a mixture is fine). For example, if you have used vaseline for a long time then you should stick to it. What I am telling her is to either go for vaseline or glycerine alltogether. Or if she wishes to use the mixture as suggested in the post, she should follow the proportions that has been mentioned.
In other words, 100% glycerin OR 100% vaseline OR the mixture as stated in the post above.

Get yourself some vitamin b3(niacin) gel caps, some lemon juice, and honey. First mix 1/2 cup of Vegetable Glycerin with 1/4 cup honey. Add 5 tsp of lemon juice and bust open and add 4 or so niacin gel gaps.
The honey and lemon juice are natural skin whiteners, while the niacin is both a skin whitener and will locally increase the blood flow in that area. Pepper or mint can also be added to increase blood flow, but it is easy to over do it which may irritate the skin.

    2. Richard Reply

Oh, and if it is too sticky or slimy, you can mix with yogurt until you have a consistancy you like. Yogurt contains lactic acid, which has known skin lightening properties.

    1. debshikha banerjee Reply

      Hi Sumera

Skin tan can be best removed with curd(as I do). Apply it and let it dry. Wash off and DO NOT apply anything on your face immediately after that. Curd also leaves behind slight smell. In case you don’t like the idea, you can cut a slice of tomato or lemon and keep rubbing it gently on your face till there is no juice left. Wash off with normal water. Do it regularly and you tans will start vanishing eventually.

      Happy Sunday 🙂

      Welcome to HNBT. 🙂
Yes, the duo work wonder on skin. But since you already use one product(as you mentioned), it would suggest you don’t use two products at the same time. If Nivia Men suits you, go with it. But if you want to switch over to using glycerin and rose water, do consult a dermatologist and confirm if they are suitable. Since we are talking about your face, let’s not experiment and take a chance 🙂

      Happy Sunday 🙂

      Dear falguni,

I have had severe ichthyosis my whole life. Vegetable glycerin has been the best thing that has ever happened for my skin! I didn’t find out about it until I was in my 20’s. Rub it all over your body WHILE YOUR SKIN IS STILL WET, RIGHT AFTER A SHOWER OR SOAK! It doesn’t work as well if your skin is dry. I normally do not dilute it with anything, little bit will go a long way. You can get glycerin at a pharmacy or on line. It’s harmless and just attracts moisture. I wish someone told me when I was a kid. I suffered and hated my life. Using it even made my skin look better and not even flake… just lines. Good luck and I know what you’re going through.

      Hello Adi

The first and best way to keep off pimples and acne from your face is by keeping it clean and drinking 3-4 litres of water daily. Following the above mentioned tips will help you control pimples and acne but not completely vanish them as they are dependent on other factors too. For example, proper sleep and diet is also very necessary. Try to keep a balance between your diet, rest and fluid intake and follow the above steps. I’m sure you will get the desired results.

    2. Keerthana Nair Reply

Hi Adi, welcome to HNBT. Glycerin worked in ridding pimples for some, and never made difference for the others. I suggest that you try it out on a small part of the affected area first. Hi! I got curious regarding the benefits of glycerine to skin…i’m just wondering, can i mix glycerine with vitamin e or mixed it with my regular glutathione lotion??? Will it harm my skin in some ways?? Thanks…

    1. Keerthana Nair Reply

      Hi Red, welcome to HNBT.
As to my knowledge, glycerin can be mixed with Vitamin E oil. However, I have not came across any reviews or testimonials on its mixing with glutathione lotion. You might want to consult a dermatologist to check on this one.

Can i mix glycerin with argan oil?

    1. Keerthana Nair Reply

Hi Neiro, you may give it a try. There has not been any reviews on this combination yet. You can mix in small amount though, about 5-10 drops.

  32. Veena Reply

I’ve read that the mixture of rose water and glycerin can help fatten the face? I have a very gaunt face and it makes me look like I’m sick most of the time. Will this mixture help at all? I lost all of my fave fat working out and dieting, trying to lose the weight. I lost the weight and u fortunately my face, too.

    1. Keerthana Nair Reply

Hi Veena. I am afraid that it won’t work that way. Perhaps you could try applying butter? There are quite a number of legitimate reviews that claim butter and sugar helped make cheeks chubbier.

  33. Ruby Coleman Reply

In your opinion is it okay to use GLYCEROL in place of GLYCERIN..?

    1. Keerthana Nair Reply

Hi Allan, concluding from our research, glycerin is the same as glycerol. But you might want to check their ingredients on the label to see if they are the same.

I have been using mixture of Glycerin, rose water and lemon water for more than 15 years. It’s just wonderful. I have tried highly moisturizing creams and nothing works on my skin. I have exteremly dry skin and Itchyosis vulgaris. And, yet by using Glycerin, rose water and lemon water in 1, 1/5, 1/10 proportion my skin looks young and free from any patches !!!
Give it a try, you would see difference just in 3-4 days. I apply it just after bath (within 1-2 min after coming out of the shower, to tap the maximum moisture under the skin).

I just read that glycerine products “may make you more sensitive to the sun. Check the label for any warnings or ask your doctor or pharmacist if you need to take any special precautions when in the sun. Your doctor/pharmacist may suggest that you limit your time in the sun, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor right away if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness.”
